Coastal protection: Rocky start to save beach

The second phase of Aberdeen City Council’s £3.5M project to protect the city’s beach from erosion has got under way with the placing of 18,000t of rock armour to reduce wave energy.
The cube-shaped rocks from Norway, weighing 4-6t, will be transhipped a mile offshore on to a barge 2,000t at a time for unloading at high tide and subsequent placement at low tide. The move follows the placing of 70,000m3 of sand dredged from Montrose Harbour.
