The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning to coastal and tidal areas and said that the highest tides of the year are due on 8, 9 and 10 September.
Evening high tides are likely to cause flooding during the autumn equinox if they coincide with stormy weather such as high winds and wave surges. In October 2004, the agency issued a severe flood warning from Land’s End to Plymouth when the south coast was lashed by storms and high tides.
‘It is important that everyone living on the coast or in a tidal area is aware of the risk and is prepared,’ said Environment Agency spokesman Tim Wood. ‘Although we know the predicted tide levels are high we won’t know until nearer the date what local weather conditions will be like. These have a major influence on whether tides will cause flood problems.’
