City’s legal battle ends with a bang following out-of-court deal

Manchester City Council has settled out of court for £1.7M with the designer and builders of its ill-fated ‘B of the Bang’ public sculpture.

The council has settled with Thomas Heatherwick Studio and its sub-contractors Packman Lucas, Flint and Neill Partnership and Westbury Structures, over the design and construction problems of the sculpture, which is located at Sportcity in east Manchester.

The council says it will now consider the future of the structure, from which at least nine ‘spikes’ have fallen or been removed since it was first installed. It remains cordoned off from the public.
