City takes charge in emissions fight

Brighton and Hove City Council has become the first authority outside the capital to introduce electric vehicle charging points.

The local authority will install 20 roadside charging stations by early 2010 in an effort to encourage zero-emissions motoring in the city.

Four charging points have already been installed in Brighton – two located in Bartholomews, near the city centre, and two in Ditchling Road, near the Level.

A total of 10 charging points will be installed in the city centre by the end of 2009, and an additional 10 at the beginning of 2010.

The charging point scheme is part of the council’s sustainable transport policy. Brighton-based Elektromotive develops and manufactures the charging points, and the project is being funded by a £130,000 European Civitas grant.
