More than 33,000 penalty charge notices have been issued to illegally-parked motorists in Leicester in the six months since the city council took over parking enforcement.
Since decriminalised parking enforcement came into force on 2 January, an average of just over 6,000 tickets a month have been issued by contractor Vinci Park.
Penalty charge notices totalling almost £760,000 have been paid to the council, and a further £537,000 is owed by motorists who are yet to pay their fines.
However,
Leicester City Council’s parking team leader, Nigel Clarke, said there had been a ‘huge’ improvement in compliance with on-street parking restrictions, ‘but there is still some way to go’. ‘We are now seeking approval for four additional parking attendants, to enable more enforcement to be carried out in the outer areas of the city,’ he said. Leicestershire County Council is to take on parking enforcement in July.
