City steers towards cycle hire scheme

Oxford City Council has announced plans for an 18-month pilot to test the potential for a permanent cycle hire scheme in the city.

Following in the footsteps of several European cities, cabinet members have agreed to form a steering group to develop the trial.

Representatives from Oxford University, Oxford Brookes University and the Oxford Hospitals Trust have expressed an interest in becoming partner organisations.

Ian Hudspeth, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: ‘We are committed to encouraging more people to cycle in Oxford. We believe both residents and visitors would ‘reap the benefits’ of such a scheme.’ The authority has set aside some £70,000 funding for the pilot and is seeking contributions from other project partners to reach the forecasted £130,000 costs.
