City signs £3bn waste deal

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority is near to closing its 25-year, £3bn, waste PFI deal with Viridor Waste Management and John Laing Investments (Viridor Laing).

The deal will see the consortium deal with almost 1.4Mt of Greater Manchester’s waste every year.

Agreement has been reached on all major commercial principles, and the authority has committed to a timetable, which will see financial closure by 6 June.

The deal was originally scheduled to go ahead 12 months ago but was held up by a planning application for an energy-from-waste plant.
