City prepares to put a block on street crime

A back lane plagued by crime will be locked up at night in a new initiative being piloted in Glasgow.
The city’s alleways were the scene of more than 700 reported crimes last year, forcing the council to consider purpose-built gates. Sauchiehall Lane will be the first closed.
Once installed, the gate will be locked after 11pm at night and reopened at 6am the following morning, six days a week. They will remain closed on Sundays.
The success of the scheme will be assessed before the council decides whether or not to install further gates on four other lanes.
