‘City of dreaming spires’ aspires to be a pedestrian’s dream

 
New proposals to transform Oxford’s historic city centre by making it more pedestrian-friendly have been launched.

The work will initially focus on four major streets in 2009/10, moving to other parts of the city centre later. It will lead to a reduction in bus flows and more pedestrian space.

Cllr Keith Mitchell, leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: ‘The city’s heritage is both its strength and weakness. Moving large numbers of people on a medieval road network is a challenge that will take bold vision, agreed by all organisations, on the basis of mature negotiation and compromise.
