The council’s highways team had called for an extra £1.5m after warning that damage caused by the ‘worst winter in 20 years’ was ‘growing daily’. The council had already approved an additional £4m on top of its usual maintenance budget in April.

Eddie Fellows, the council’s assistant infrastructure manager, told Surveyor: ‘The winter caused unprecedented levels of damage and many roads suffered. Through a combination of safety inspections and public involvement, we believe we have now identified almost all of the damage. The city will get good value out of this as it will ease pressure on the unplanned maintenance budget and reduce financial risk of third party liability claims.’
