City has right Connections to revamp waterfront

Plans for a major facelift for Liverpool’s city centre waterfront are to be realised, after stakeholders approved the £3.4M needed for the project.
The Waterfront Connections project aims to transform the Mersey waterfront, a World Heritage Site, by improving visitor access with environmental and public realm enhancements.
The development includes construction of a new pedestrian bridge across Dukes Dock between Kings Waterfront and Albert Dock, improvements to Britannia Courtyard and the Canning Graving Docks area, upgrading visitor facilities, disabled access and building a new visitor centre at Albert Dock, new signposting, and environmental improvements to the Strand, adjoining Salthouse Dock.
The North West Regional Development Agency has funded £2.9M of the project, with other stakeholders, including the Albert Dock Company, Tate Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool, paying for the rest of it.
Liverpool City Council is taking over the project from initial leaders Liverpool Vision and NWDA. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Regeneration executive member, Cllr Peter Millea, said: ‘There is a huge amount of development taking place on the waterfront which will attract visitors from all over the world.
‘This project will not only make it easier for people to get from one attraction to another but it will help create a more pleasant environment for an area which is vital to the city’s regeneration.’
