City has demolition covered as it follows regeneration route

VHE Construction has demolished a 38m-long bridge spanning the A629 – part of the reclamation of the former Smithywood Colliery near Sheffield.
The single-span bridge consisted of four pre-cast pre-stressed concrete beams, joined by eights diaphragm beams supporting the concrete deck. The demolition involved the placement of steel plates over the A629, covered by 1m of hardcore, to protect the carriageway. Once the protection was in place, VHE used excavators to break up the bridge in-situ and remove the material to enable the road to reopen on schedule the next day.
The former Smithywood open cast colliery and coking works extends to over 23ha and is located on the northeast outskirts of Sheffield. The contract includes the creation of new development platforms for future office, warehousing and distribution use. The work involves construction of road infrastructure, signalled junctions, and a new roundabout.
