City fares may rise to pay for national concessions

Peak-time concessionary fares may have to rise in Greater Manchester this autumn to help pay for the national scheme which begins in April.

GMPTA won a 4% increase in its levy, resulting in a rise from £151.83M in 2007/08 to £157.95M in 2008/09, and will freeze fares for children and over-60s before 9.30am.

PTA leaders had asked for a 5% increase and would have liked to raise concessionary fares before 9.30am from 70p to 75p to compensate.

But bus operators have removed 5p fare denominations and no longer have the equipment to cope with a five pence increase.
