City counts spoils in recycling deal

Manchester City Council has teamed up with National Grid to launch an initiative to reduce the amount of spoil excavated from road works and taken to landfill. The scheme, the first of its kind in the country, will see recycling used to reduce road works and protect the environment.

Under the new scheme, there will be more use of recycled products and an increase in reuse of excavated road products within the city’s highways maintenance and improvement programme.

The ultimate goal is to achieve a target of 100% of excavated highway material being recycled within construction projects.

Both the council and National Grid have agreed to make wider use of recycled products – from recycled plastic kerbstones and road barriers to incorporating shredded tyres into material for resurfacing footpaths.
