~Dorset County Council~ is pressing ahead with plans for a Weymouth relief road, unfazed by MPs stating it is not needed for the Olympic sailing events.
Anti-road protesters seized on the transport select committee’s finding that the £100M project was not needed to cater for the expected 5,000-15,000 daily spectators, adding to the normal holiday traffic. While Dorset had cited it as necessary, backbenchers observed that the scheme did not feature in the Olympics bidding document.
Rebecca Lush, of Road Block, was grateful the committee had made it clear that the ‘destructive road’ was not part of the Olympic transport strategy. But Andy Ackerman, head of highways client services at Dorset, said it was ‘a long-standing project’. It was discussing with the Countryside Agency ways of ameliorating the proposal’s environmental impact.
