Chill winds of recession bring pay freeze for TfL seniors

Transport for London (TfL) has drawn up proposals to freeze the pay of its senior staff, because of the economic downturn.

The organisation will also review the bonuses of transport commissioner, Peter Hendy, as well as directors and senior management.

The move will not affect ongoing negotiations with the rest of the organisation’s workforce, which has been offered a pay rise of 1% above inflation this year.

A TfL spokesman said: ‘TfL is mindful of the need to deliver the best-possible value for money for London’s tax and fare payers.

‘We have put in place a programme to save at least £2.4bn over the course of our business plan, which we are making good progress in delivering. We are continuing to seek further efficiencies.

‘Given the current economic climate and pressure on TfL’s finances, the commissioner and chief officers have also drawn up proposals to freeze senior pay and review bonuses.’

The TfL board’s remuneration committee will consider the proposals later this month.
