Cheers at the Old Bailey as traffic growth is arrested

The Corporation of London has ‘reclaimed the carriageway’ at the Old Bailey criminal court with a new £600,000 public space using large granite paving slabs.
There has been a 40% reduction in traffic in the central City area in the last two years as a result of both the congestion charge and the City’s traffic and environmental zone. The landscape architect Burns and Nice-designed space is defined by stone planters which also protect it from traffic noise. A 7m-long water feature with 15 jets provides a central focus.
The corporation is also creating a pedestrianised piazza out of 1,500m2 of free-up carriageway space at The Monument.
