Charity plans network of car clubs across the country

Carplus, the national charity behind car club schemes, has submitted plans to the Department of Transport to roll out a network of car clubs across the country.

The four-year plan, entitled the National Network Proposal, hopes to significantly increase the spread of car clubs and aims to get 180,000 people using 8,000 cars. Carplus is asking the DfT for £12.8M, with the rest of the £70M being provided by private investors and planning agreements.

The project shows a benefit cost ratio of 12:53. Carplus says the scheme would bring a range of benefits, including a reduction in carbon emission, easing congestion and reducing transport costs – household and business – enabling regeneration of city centres without increasing traffic. The charity says the proposal will deliver the benefits of car clubs ten times sooner than if it was left to market forces.

‘It will increase accessibility and reduce car use,’ said Carplus director, Philip Igoe. ‘The scheme will establish the infrastructure to enable local schemes to be developed and to be economically viable, establish partnerships within local communities, and have the credibility to negotiate with national bodies.’
