Cash boost to encourage disabled on to buses

Transport leaders in Greater Manchester have allocated money towards improving bus services in the area, including an innovative project aimed at making the service more usable for people with learning disabilities.
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) has awarded £41,151 to the Trafford branch of United Response to tackle bullying and harassment experienced by residents with disabilities when using public transport, and it has also announced plans to spend almost £12M on improvements to bus routes over the next 12 months. National research has indicated that many people with learning disabilities get spat on, pushed, verbally abused and their clothes and hair pulled while using public transport.
With the funds, United Response will attempt to tackle the issue by working with people with disabilities and the Trafford Crime Reduction Team to establish the extent of the problem in the area. It will develop strategies to prevent the problem, which will eventually be shared with similar organisations in Greater Manchester. Meanwhile, the GMPTA’s allocation of £12M will go towards its Quality Bus Corridor initiative, which is in its final year. When the corridors are completed, they will cover more than 274km along 24 key routes.
