Carillion snaps up rival

Carillion has acquired former road-building rival, Alfred McAlpine.

McAlpine shareholders will receive a basic offer of 1.08 Carillion shares and 165.4p in cash for each McAlpine share.

The acquisition cost £561m and the new bigger Carillion will have an annual turnover of £5.3bn, with 50,000 employees.
