Carillion contract extended ‘with safeguards’

A contractor, criticised by a local authority because workers were taking long breaks to visit bakeries and stretching out small jobs for several hours, has been allowed to keep the deal after strict monitoring agreements were officially announced.
An investigation by Surrey County Council discovered one road crew working for Carillion clocked-up less than one hour of work in an eight-hour shift in July, which the firm insisted was just a ‘one off.’
The partnering deal, established three years ago, sought to combine the ‘trust and partnership’ with robust performance management (Surveyor, 3 March 2003).
Due to the fact that Carillion waived more than £1M it had over-invoiced Surrey for, and agreed to undertake about £750,000 work for free and has met the majority of its performance indicators, its contract has been extended to 2009.
Carillon was marked down on customer satisfaction and health and safety issues, with scores of 75% and 59%, but only fell short of the 90% target for delivering work within agreed times and dates with a score of 89%.
