Cardiff may sell 40% of bus operation to modernise system

Cardiff City Council is considering selling a minority stake in the city’s council-owned bus company to a private partner.

The Welsh council could sell up to 40% of Cardiff Bus to a strategic partner as part of a wider plan to develop its public transport system over the next decade.

‘Cardiff Council is committed to the transport infrastructure in the city and as such, is exploring the possibility of transferring a minority stake in Cardiff Bus to a third party in order to help realise investment in the business,’ the council said in a statement. This investment would help guarantee onward growth of the business while ensuring the council had the majority share in the company ‘to protect the best interests of the citizens of Cardiff’.

A report to the council’s executive said a strategic partnership with the private sector could be established to facilitate implementation of the Cardiff Transport Partnership, with bus services playing a leading role in measures to modernise the city’s transport system. It also cited the case of Nottingham City Council, which sold an 18% stake of Nottingham City Transport (NCT) to Transdev in 2000.
