Bus operators fear Cardiff’s first full-time park-and-ride facility will be undermined by the city council offering car share at the same site from the outset, without bedding in the bus shuttle first.
A new statement of Cardiff’s transport priorities says the Pentwyn site, east of the city, is being developed in three phases and ‘will be promoted in the first phase, with park-and-share facilities complemented with shared bus and high occupancy vehicle lanes... and this will enable the promotion of initiatives such as journey sharing.’
Confederation of Passenger Transport Wales chairman, John Gould, said: ‘Our view is that park and ride should be given its chance, and park and share should be a second runner.’ He said park and ride was more effective at removing cars from the city centre.
An authority spokeswoman said the council was currently tendering for a park-and-ride bus service. ‘Additional facilities such as park and share will be provided to open up the availability of the site to those who wish to car share,’ she added.
