Car-owners face being charged out of eco town

Motorists may be charged for driving their cars out of a proposed eco town, under plans revealed by a potential developer.

Jarrow Investments, strongly linked with Tesco in a bid to set up a Cambridgeshire eco town, own much of the proposed site at Hanley Grange. It has put forward ideas including locating residents’ car parking spaces on the edge of town to discourage residents from using them, and an inverted congestion charge in which drivers are charged for taking their cars out of the town.

Jarrow spokesman, Sebastian Hanley, said: ‘We are exploring a number of options to reduce the need for car use and encourage people on to public transport as part of our eco town proposals.

‘Obviously, people would only use their car when necessary if it wasn’t parked on their doorstep. We have a range of public transport developments planned including improving bus services to connect housing to the two nearby rail stations and employment centres, locating housing close to bus stops, and improving cycle and pedestrian routes, together with measures to make it less attractive to drive.’

The Government has set eco towns a target of reducing car use by half. Jarrow’s disclosure comes after criticism that Hanley Grange would become another London commuter town.
