Capital KSIs rise 8%, with little progress elsewhere

There was an 8% increase in the numbers killed and seriously injured on London roads in 2006, as deaths throughout England remained stubbornly high.

A total of 3,172 fatalities were recorded on England’s roads in 2006, only 1% fewer than in 2005, and 11% down on the 1994-98 average. More than three-quarters of those killed were men.

One-third were car drivers, and more than half of deaths occurred on non-built up roads. Motorcycle KSIs remained the same as in 1994-98 – 5,885 were seriously injured, and 599 were killed.

TRL predicted there would only be a 19% cut in road deaths by 2010 without new measures. Transport for London said that KSIs in the capital were still 41% below the 1994-98 average. Furthermore, some of the increase in serious injuries in 2006 was probably down to discrepancies in the 2004/05 data, it said.
