Campaign targets crossing misuse

Network Rail has launched a national TV advertising campaign to remind the 2,000 motorists and pedestrians who misuse level crossings every year they run a significant risk of dying.

The rail network has more than 7,600 crossings and already, between January and September this year, it witnessed 2,636 incidents.

NR said 34% of incidents involved vehicles, and 95% of accidents were caused by drivers ignoring red signals, barriers and klaxons. Most misuse was deliberate. ‘Every week, three motorists risk their lives and those of others by abusing level crossings,’ said chief executive, Iain Croucher. ‘We have a simple message to all, “Don’t run the risk”.’

Work is under way to improve obstacle-detection systems and detection of misuse, to prosecute offenders and eliminate some crossings.
