Campaign launched to stop relaxation of planning rules

The Planning Disaster Coalition has launched an online campaign to block changes to the planning system which, it claims, would push through new road schemes and incinerators without adequate public consultation.

The
coalition of more than 50 environmental campaign groups has published an online guide to more than 100 schemes it claims would be forced through under government changes to the current system, in response to the Barker review of land use planning. An interactive map shows the location and details on dozens of major new road schemes, nuclear power stations, incinerators and airport expansions.

Major road schemes include widening of the M6 between Staffordshire and Cheshire, and the new Mersey bridge. The coalition is calling on the Government to rethink the White Paper and introduce a system which gives local people a real say in how their area is developed.

It has set a deadline of 17 August for online petitioners. Owen Espley, co-ordinator for the environmental pressure group said: ‘We developed the map so that people can see how changes to the planning system could affect their area. It shows many major new developments which could be forced through, with local people effectively prevented from having a say.’ : www.planningdisaster.co.uk
