Cameras put attendants ahead of colleagues

Parking attendants in Salford have been equipped with head-mounted digital cameras to help resolve disputes over parking tickets and reduce assaults on staff.
The miniature cameras will record live footage of ‘what the attendants see’ as they carry out their duties on the street. Footage will be recorded on to a disk within the cameras and the material will be downloaded at the end of each shift. The technology will also assist attendants in their expanded role covering a range of other offences, including littering, flyposting, and dog fouling under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (2005).
Contractor NCP Services has been assessing the viability of the technology for some time and, having taken on the contract for Salford MBC, the council opted for the trial. A spokesman for the company said the technology had come down in price sufficiently for the trail to be viable. Should it prove to be successful, NCP hopes to roll out the cameras to other areas where it holds enforcement contracts.
