Camera technology proved to cut KSIs

Road casualties have been significantly reduced on areas of the UK network using average-speed enforcement technology.

Site with two years of post-installation history showed ‘significant’ killed and seriously injured (KSI) reductions, according to Geoff Collins, sales and marketing director of manufacturer SCS Speed Check Services.

New research by SCS has revealed that on one 3.5km stretch of the A631 in Nottingham, an area that was one of the first to use cameras in 2000, KSIs have been cut completely. On the B6004 in Nottingham, a 72% reduction in KSIs was recorded, and there were positive results in Northampton where reduction rates reached 85.2% 50 months after installation. Use of cameras in roadworks projects had led to more reliable journey times, low speeding offence levels and smoother traffic flows, according to SCS.

Works on the M8 junction 28, between January and April 2007, had led to significant delays during the morning peak before cameras were installed. After, there were no delays, average speeds were 38mph, with compliance to the 40mph speed limit at 99.7%. It was also recognised that driver behaviour and perception had improved in areas which used the system that had led to a reduction in the number of tickets for speeding issued in all areas. ‘I think, despite the negative publicity we had in the beginning, here is all the proof we need that these cameras are hugely effective,’ said Collins.

‘Collisions are down, casualties are reduced, and journeys are more reliable,’ he added. The current generation of SPECS cameras is to be replaced by SPECS3, using remote networking camera modules. All cameras will communicate back to a remote viewing station, allowing lengths of roads to be monitored and controlled.
