Cambridge starts on worlds longest 'bus'-way

Construction of the world’s longest guided busway began this week with Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander at officiating the occasion.
The 25km-long, £116.2M Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, will run along a disused railway between St Ives and Cambridge, It is hoped the improved transport links will draw thousands of new residents to the area Alexander was at the start of works ceremony on Monday and completed the final section of concrete at the manufacturing facility, which will be used to produce the guideways for the project.
‘The scale of the Government’s investment, £92M, shows our commitment to this project. Two years of work now lies ahead, but we believe this is an innovative public transport solution for an area where so much economic and housing growth is planned,’ he said. The rest of the busway bill will be paid for by developers in the area. A second section will run from Cambridge Railway Station to Trumpington Park and Ride. Work will also be undertaken to ease the movement of the buses through the centre of Cambridge.
