Call to limit permits rejected

Transport for London has rejected a suggestion from utilities to restrict the scope of its street works permit scheme to the busiest roads.
David Turnbull, operations director of the National Joint Utilities Group, earlier this month called on highways authorities – and the secretary of state – to ‘cut costs and maximise the benefits’ by only applying permits to category one and two roads.
But Peter Brown, chief operating officer of TfL’s London Streets, told Surveyor: ‘Road-users are concerned about all streets. London has a dense urban network and all traffic flow is sensitive to works.’
