Call to arms over shared services

Councils considering setting a shared service should ‘stop talking about it [and] take a leap of faith’, the managing director of one of the longest-established shared service organisations in the UK has claimed.

Speaking at the APSE conference in Derry today, managing director of Tayside Contracts, Iain Waddell, urged councils to dive into shared services. He said he believed the joint committee model was the easiest way to deliver shared services.

Mr Waddell told delegates considering shared service to decide what legal model was best for you; ensure you have control of all your costs, including support costs; and ensure the people and the culture are right.

Tayside Contracts is not a private company, but a wholly owned subsidiary of three councils, Angus Council, Dundee City Council and Perth and Kinross Council.
