Dr Susan Sharland has been appointed the new president of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation for 2015/16.
The former chief executive of both the Transport Research Laboratory Ltd and the Transport Research Foundation, has made the theme of her presidency ‘Intelligent Transport in a Connected World’ with the focus on technology and innovation.
Ms Sharland said: ‘CIHT is always looking to provide a better service for members and society as a whole. Our organisation and industry is changing and transport, infrastructure and technology should be considered in a much broader context.
‘CIHT has an important leadership role in promoting intelligent transport in a connected world. We will be highlighting CIHT’s role to everybody involved in transport infrastructure, including complementary sectors such as telecoms and utilities.’
Three main strands to her presidential theme are:
- what transport will look like in the future and what skills are needed to deliver it
- improving transport network accessibility through technology
- shaping the nature of innovation in transport
