Shredded used tyres are being used to produce good drainage for the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway.
The tyres are being used to fill 40,000m3 of space between the tracks. A mixture of soil, seed and ballast will then be added to help the grass grow.
A variety of recycled materials which comply with highways regulations, including crushed glass, gravel, crushed concrete and rock, were all explored by contractor BAM Nuttall before it selected shredded tyres for the project.
About 45 used tyres are needed per cubic metre for drainage – in total, around 1.8M will be recycled and used for the construction of the busway.
