Business link to drive regeneration

Council scaled down orirginal plans
Construction of the new Tradeston Bridge in Glasgow is set to begin, after the city council approved a £3.7M tender from Edmund Nuttall.

Forming part of a £33M regeneration project, the footbridge will link Glasgow’s international financial services district with the south bank of the Clyde. Previous plans for a Clyde footbridge were scrapped after the original design came in at more than £60M – including public works – prompting the council to cap costs for the bridge at £6M, and the overall project at £33M. The latest projected costs fall within the limit at £27.8M. In addition to the cost of the bridge, £1.2M has been set aside for contingency, £12.8M for public realm and Quay Wall works, £2.9M for miscellaneous costs – including fees and land acquisitions, and £7.2M for costs relating to the previous tender.
Scottish Executive Glasgow and the European Regional Development Fund will contribute £10M and £4.7M respectively.
The council evaluated tenders for the footbridge from Balfour Beatty and Edmund Nuttall, opting for the latter company at a committee meeting on Friday. Edmund Nuttall also constructed the £20M Clyde Arc Bridge, dubbed the ‘squinty’ bridge, which opened to traffic in September.
Councillor Hanzala Malik, executive member for development and regeneration services, said: ‘This bridge will provide the link to excellent public realm work on both banks which will provide a highly attractive area in which to work, live and play.
‘We have worked with the contractor before on construction of the Clyde Arc and have no doubt the company will provide a bridge which will be equally popular with residents and tourists alike.’
The new bridge has been nicknamed the ‘squiggly’ bridge to go alongside the Clyde Arc, although it is yet to be officially named. The bridge is expected to be completed by May 2008.
