Bus plans agreed in Leicestershire

Councils in Leicestershire have worked together to save bus services from being axed in the Hinckley area of the county.

Leicestershire county, district and borough Councils and Leicester City Council stepped in after operator Centrebus said it would have to withdraw services because of how little it received for accepting concessionary travel passes.

However, the local authorities and Centrebus reached an agreement on a fixed price offer for 2009/10 and 2010/11, at which point the responsibility for managing and funding the concessionary travel nationally is likely to change.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for transportation, said: ‘I am happy to say that we have managed to broker a deal that guarantees the continuation of bus services planned for withdrawal next week. I am pleased that by working together the problems these cuts would have posed for regular bus users have been avoided.’
