Bus passenger numbers rise in Peterborough for sixth year running

Bus passenger numbers in Peterborough increased for the sixth year in succession in 2008/09, while car use has continued to decline, according to new figures.

Almost 13M passenger journeys were taken in 2008/09, up 3.79% on 2007/08, and more than 50% higher than in 2002/03.

The proportion of trips per head of population rose by almost 50%, from 53.9 in 2002/03 to 79.43 last year.

Separate research by Peterborough City Council’s travelchoice team reveals car use has declined by 9%, and total car journeys have reduced by 30.9 million km (19.2 million miles) between 2004 and 2008. This equates to a saving of 6,400t of CO2.
