Bury plan to switch off lights says town

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council’s executive is set to scrap a money-saving plan to switch off 40% of the borough’s streetlights.

The proposal would have seen lights in selected areas turned off between midnight and 5 am. It was estimated the switch-off would have saved the local authority £42,000 in this financial year, and £250,000 next year.

But David Higgin, chair of Bury’s economy, environment and transport scrutiny commission, said feedback from local people had shown that the plan would be unpopular – with critics fearing it could lead to a rise in crime and accidents. The scrutiny commission’s motion to scrap the scheme will be discussed at the council’s executive meeting in September.
