Budget limits fail to restrict public rights of way

Cornwall County Council has pledged to continue improving its public rights of way network, despite ‘huge pressures’ to reduce the budget from April.
The council said the current improvement programme, which began in November 2005, was producing tangible results, with better signs, gates and stiles, obstacles removed and vegetation cleared.
‘I am very glad I have been able to ensure that footpath budgets in Cornwall will not have to be cut,’ said Adam Paynter, Lib Dem, environment and heritage portfolio holder for the county council. ‘In fact, I am able to say that more resources are going into improving and managing paths and trails in Cornwall than ever before. I accept there is still much to be done, but in two years’ time, when the current programme is complete, I feel confident the majority of paths which people use will be up to scratch.’
Later this year, a number of new, multi-use trails will be completed, using grant funding from the Government and Heritage Lottery Fund. This will benefit people living in both the Camborne-Redruth area and in East Cornwall. The county council will be publicising its future proposals for paths and access to the countryside in April, and will be carrying out consultation with residents throughout the county over the early summer period.
