Britain’s streets of shame

The London boroughs of Havering, Greenwich and Hillingdon have the dirtiest streets in Britain, according to a new report by the GMB union.

Based on information supplied by councils to the Audit Commission, the figures show that more than 40% of the boroughs’ streets were dirty in 2005/06, while outside the capital, South Somerset and Stoke-on-Trent topped the table at 43% and 40%, respectively.

The area with the cleanest streets was Sevenoaks, with a faultless record, followed by West Dorset (0.1%), Chesterfield (0.2%) and Stratford-on-Avon (1.2%).
