Bristol votes for STA to steer ‘exciting’ future policies

A passenger transport executive could be set up covering the Greater Bristol area, under proposals being drawn up by officers, following a unanimous vote by Bristol City Council to endorse the scheme.

The vote, believed to be the first since the draft Local Transport Bill containing provisions allowing new strategic transport authorities was published, gave ‘in principle’ backing to a new body.

Officers are preparing a report on ‘the potential opportunities and implications of an STA’, to be presented to the council and West of England Partnership ‘as soon as possible’.

The motion was tabled by Bristol’s Conservative councillors, giving proponents of a new strategic body hope that Bristol’s Conservative-controlled Avon neighbours will also back the proposal.

Transport for Greater Bristol Alliance, which has been campaigning for greater control of public transport services across the former county of Avon since last year, was ‘incredibly optimistic’.

Pip Sheard, spokeswoman for the group, said: ‘The prospect of a strong authority to promote public transport for Greater Bristol is extremely exciting.’ Councillors were inundated with complaints about bus services, she said, but were ‘powerless to do anything’.

North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset councils would ‘need to be sure that their own interests are served, but this isn’t an insurmountable obstacle’.
