Bristol seeks energy savings

Bristol City Council is planning to save thousands of pounds in energy costs and hundreds of tonnes in carbon emissions by introducing energy-efficient lighting at three city car parks.
As part of an energy-reducing initiative, all 1,376 light fittings at Trenchard Street car park have been converted, replacing existing conventional lighting with new Retrolux T5 tri-phosphate lighting system, costing £35,000.
Since the installation, the council’s energy management unit has reported a 48% reduction in power consumed. Sensors in the new system detect when daylight levels are adequate, and switch off lamps that are not needed. The lamps can also be turned off at night, but automatically switch themselves on when movement is detected.
It is anticipated that from the Trenchard Street car park alone, the council will save at least 96t in carbon dioxide gas from entering the atmosphere, and reduce the car park’s annual lighting energy costs by almost half – to £28,000. The cost of installation ‘will pay for itself in two years or less,’ a council spokeswoman said.
The council’s other two multi-storey car parks, West End and Temple Gate, are also due for the lighting re-fit. It was expected that these would both achieve a 30% reduction in energy costs, the spokeswoman said.
