Brighton plumbs the depths to renew pipes

Work has started on a key phase of a £15.5M scheme to replace 57km of Victorian-era water pipes in Brighton and Hove.
Parts of central Brighton will be closed to traffic to accommodate the project, and Southern Water said disruption was ‘unfortunately, unavoidable’.
Much of the city’s water network is between 120 and 150 years old. Southern Water’s three-year project to replace old metal pipes with plastic ones began in June 2006 and will finish by the end of December 2009.
Bob Lennard, Special Projects Manager for Southern Water, said: ‘We are working with Brighton and Hove City Council’s highways department and other utilities carrying out works in the area to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.’
The work is taking place in the city’s busy North Street, which will be closed to westbound traffic, including buses and taxis. West Street is closed to southbound traffic.
