Brighton hikes charges to finance pensioner travel

 
Motorists in Brighton face the prospect of increases in resident parking permits and car park charges, to help pay for a concessionary fares schemes for pensioners.

Brighton & Hove councillors are poised to raise the cost of resident parking permits from £80 to £104 a year, together with a series of increases in local parking charges to make up a £3.5M budget shortfall.

A report to members of the policy and resources committee has pointed out that charges for residents’ parking have not increased in Brighton & Hove for 10 years ,while in Birmingham, permits now cost £180, and in Manchester, £150 a year. Plans to introduce concessionary bus fares for pensioners as part the Government’s national free bus pass scheme will cost the council £3.6M a year.
