Brighton council takes a firm hand in crackdown

A graffiti-tolerance policy at a park in Brighton has been revoked, due to the spread of spray can ‘art’ completely taking over and affecting neighbouring properties.

It was hoped graffiti and other usage could go hand-in-hand at Tarner Park. For the past 12 months, Brighton & Hove City Council has tried to work with the graffiti artists, but says a few are not ‘playing ball’.

Play equipment, nearby properties, and even vegetation have been targeted. Environment councillor, Geoffrey Theobald, said: ‘Managing graffiti in Tarner Park hasn’t worked and some local people have told us that they continue to avoid the area. We will not allow this to continue.’ Work to clean the site will take four weeks.
