Brighton clean-up has bin popular with residents

Brighton and Hove City Council plans to install more communal bins across the city centre to improve street cleanliness.

Depending on approval from the environment committee, the council will install bins in 557 more streets, adding to the 188 communal bins currently located across 49 central streets. The scheme was set up in 2004, and a subsequent survey showed 93% of respondents found the bins easy to use.

However, at the time, the scheme caused widespread protests on the grounds that they were an eyesore and took up too many city centre parking spaces. Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, chairman of the council’s environment committee, said: ‘Keeping the city’s streets clean is one of my top priorities. The communal bins we already have work well and are very popular with residents.’

Councillors will vote on the proposals on 13 September.
