Bridges: Mowlem’s telescopic aid extends walkers’ reach

A new bridge is being built in Shropshire to keep open a popular walking link between the villages of Highley and Alveley. The current bridge is suffering from widespread concrete spalling and needs to be replaced. Contractor Mowlem is building the new three-span bridge, and will lift it into place on 12 July using a 1,000t telescopic mobile crane, the largest of its type in the UK. The structure comprises two varying depth ribs and top slab, supported on reinforced concrete abutments and piers. Improving the approaches to the bridge is also part of the proposed work which is now expected to finish in October and cost £1.45M. The bridge, which replaces the current 90m structure, was built off-site for safety reasons, and to limit environmental damage.
