Bridges: Funding gap leaves ‘twin sails’ crossing plans in uncertain waters

Poole council’s striking ‘twin sails’ bridge across the harbour has obtained a Transport and Works Act order, but the scheme needs contributions from developers to go ahead. The long-sought-after harbour crossing is designed to open up 46ha of vacant and under-utilised land in central Poole for regeneration. But the stumbling block remains the £34M cost for the structure, consisting of two triangular bascules that can rise to allow vessels to pass. But the council is hopeful that the £20M needed – on top of the Government’s pledged £14M – for the Gifford and Partners/Wilkinson Eyre-designed bridge can be plugged. ‘Now we have government approval, developers will be able to see the potential,’ a spokesman said.
