Bridges: Feasibility study goes Forth

The Forth Estuary Transport Authority is set to award a £1.5M contract for a feasibility study into augmenting or even replacing the Forth Road Bridge’s main cables. The study is necessary because while FETA was ‘optimistic we can stop the corrosion using a specially-designed dehumidification system to dry the cables out’, the method was not always successful, according to Barry Colford, FETA’s depute general manager. A report to the FETA board recommends accepting the tender submitted by consulting engineer WA Fairhurst & Partners. The full results will be reported after 18 months, with headline findings going to ministers next May.
