Bridges: Designs for Stratford unveiled

Five designs have been short-listed for a controversial river crossing in historic Stratford-upon-Avon. The designs for the bridge, which Warwickshire County Council hopes can begin construction in 2008, underline the county’s aim to create a ‘world-class’ foot and cycle crossing. The £2M bridge, which has yet to receive the backing of Stratford-upon-Avon District Council, is to be subject to a consultation, due to start on the August bank holiday weekend. The public will have the opportunity to view and give comments on the designs at a series of public exhibitions, to be run over an eight-week period, at locations across Stratford. John Deegan, Warwickshire’s director of environment, has held talks with the district council and the Stratford Voice community group, both of which have expressed concerns over the project. Deegan said: ‘The meeting with Stratford Voice was a frank and open discussion and, for me, an extremely worthwhile meeting. They expressed concerns, which will be considered as part of the consultation. All public views will be welcomed, residents and visitors alike.’ Lynda Organ, a councillor on the planning committee of Stratford-upon-Avon District Council attended the meeting, and said she understands the consultation will include an option for residents to turn down the bridge, if they want. She said: ‘My understanding is the bridge itself – and not just the designs – will be subject to the public consultation. We are therefore waiting for the result of the consultation to see what the people of Stratford want.’ The idea for a new bridge originated from Warwickshire’s consultation into its local transport plan strategy in 2003. The aim is to better link the Royal Shakespeare Theatre with the town centre and the terminus of a park-and-ride service, which started earlier this year. It would form part of a wider waterfront masterplan, supported by funding from regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands. As a new landmark development, it is also expected to make Stratford more attractive to visitors, tourists, and residents alike. According to Warwickshire, a panel of judges will meet in November to make a final assessment of the five designs, informed by feedback from the public consultation and technical considerations. The aim is to submit a planning application in the spring. Advantage West Midlands has provided £7M towards the ‘world-class Stratford project’, £2M of which has been ring-fenced for the bridge.
